a bit more about me

My name is Madison Wise, and I'm a licensed professional counselor (license #87066) for individuals in the state of Texas.

I graduated from Texas State University with my Master’s in Professional Counseling in 2021. Prior to graduation, I completed a (school) year-long internship with the SAFE Alliance where I worked with victims and survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault. This experience, along with my education, informs the basics of my practice for trauma processing, the unpacking of oppressive systems and their impact, community building, and personal empowerment.

I first went to therapy as a freshman in college, when I knew that something wasn’t right but I wasn’t quite sure exactly what was wrong either. It was not a helpful experience, and I didn’t return to therapy again until my senior year of undergrad, when I was struggling with depression. This experience was much better, as I was met by a counselor who provided me with warmth, understanding, empathy, and a challenge to my intense self-loathing. She helped me survive a scary and painful time. I continue to be a client in addition to being a therapist, and this relationship and process continually informs my work.

I work from a human-centered, relational-cultural lens, which means that my goals for therapy are your goals for therapy - your healing, growth and direction will come from within you - and I’ll help you access that through structure, navigation, and ideally enough safety that you feel free to drop any masks and speak courageously about your experiences, wants, and needs.

I am a white, queer, cis-gendered, neurodivergent woman who grew up in a relatively small town in Kansas. I am committed to anti-racism and to not reinforcing the racist-capitalist values of the system in which we live in the therapy room.

I am non-religious, but was raised in a christian(ish) household and regularly work with clients to untangle religious trauma.

I love working with LGBTQ+ clients to explore and affirm their identities and the ways that intersects with daily life and mental health.

I believe that the personal is political and this informs my work.
